Pay-TV platform management company, Arab Digital Distribution (ADD), has signed a strategic alliance with Planetarabia as it looks to develop its Internet presence and strategy. As part of the deal, Arab Digital Distribution has acquired a major strategic equity stake in Planetarabia. While the exact value of the deal has not been disclosed, it is rumoured to be around ‘several’ million dollars.

Although the two companies have only now formalised the deal they have, in fact, been working together for several months on projects such as the provision of live sports coverage via the Internet and providing Internet coverage to a number of ADD telecast shows.

"This is the first deal of its kind in this region. An established media powerhouse has teamed up with an IT new media leader to create a singularly well endowed company,” says Imad Benharouga, CEO of Planetarabia.

"We looked at Planetarabia and saw a team that shared our vision and goals. While the Internet is something that has not been our core competency till now, the online response to ADD has been growing massively and this medium is definitely maturing and cannot be ignored. With the culmination of this deal we will continue the trend that we have started and keep adding more and more value to our client relationships," adds Dr. John Tydeman, CEO of ADD.

The tie-up comes at a time when Planetarabia, like many of the region’s other portals, is trying to build up its e-services line of business in the face of low revenues.

" The formal signing of our tie-up with ADD is just the first step in building what we envision to be a sound long-term relationship. Clearly, by joining our efforts and resources we aim to achieve a long list of objectives, from building unique online content to offering multi-platform advertising solutions," explains Benharouga.
