Sun's entry-level servers reach new levels of performance

Sun Microsystems has unveiled the latest version of its Sun Fire 280R server range. The new models will have 900 Mhz proccessors and 8 MB of cache memory that is significantly more than the competition according to Sun.

Sun Microsystems has unveiled the latest version of its Sun Fire 280R server range. The new models will have 900 Mhz proccessors and 8 MB of cache memory. Running on the Solaris 8 operating system it has 20% more performance than the 750 MHz systems. Any customers with the previous version can upgrade by simply swapping the processors over.

Sun says that one of the main benefits of the increased processor speed is faster transactions during I/O and compute-intensive environments as well as the reliability and scalability of the SPARC/Solaris platform.

“With the 900 MHz UltraSparc III processor, the Sun Fire 280R server further extends our enterprise class features and performance for mission-critical applications, delivered in a rack-optimised package,” said Souheil Saliba, director of marketing for Sun’s Volume Systems products. “With memory and system interconnect capabilities well out of reach by similar Wintel/Lintel entry-level servers, our faster processor performance further establishes Sun as the technology leader in this space.”

One of the examples Sun cites for the benefits its systems offer is Caprion Pharmaceuticals, which has computer intensive applications and research programs. Dr Paul Kearney, director of bioinformatics for Caprion, said: “At Caprion we need enormous computing capacity to conduct the biological research for drug discovery on the scale that we do. The Sun Fire 280R servers have the scalability, flexibility and processing power to handle not just the awesome requirements of today, but also the vastly increased needs in meeting the challenges of tomorrow.”
