Gulf Insurance Company (GIC) announced today that it has chosen to switch from an Informix database to Oracle. The Kuwait-based insurer is one of the largest in the region and wanted its customers and partners to have access to records and services on a 24/7 basis so an internet-based database was chosen.

Osama Tyoan, IT manager for GIC, said: “We required a technology partner with a secure, reliable internet platform that could grow with our business. Oracle’s integrated internet platform proved to be ideal for our needs.”

GIC has been using Oracle’s JDeveloper 3.2 for its business application development for over a year, so when the company needed to integrate legacy systems Oracle made sense. The need to develop both English and Arabic versions of applications was an important factor for GIC.

“GIC needed an internet platform that would allow us to develop bilingual solutions as our staff, partners and customers required that functionality. By migrating to the Oracle database we no longer needed to cobble together divers offerings from a variety of vendors. With the successful implementation of the first phase GIC’s interenet strategy we are now ready to bring the same highly scalable and available online services to our customers and partners,” added Tyoan.

Ayman Abouseif, marketing director for Oracle MEA, said: “The GIC is an excellent example of a Gulf-based organisation that is embracing the power of internet based computing, both for the efficiencies it brings internally, as well as the external benefits of offering increased customer service and accessibility. By migrating to the Oracle Database, GIC has simplified their development and deployment environments, in turn helping to lower the total cost of ownership and speed to market.”
