Alcatel has signed an agreement with Jordan Telecom, Jordan’s incumbent telecom operator, for the expansion of its current fixed network. Alcatel will provide its Alcatel 1000 MM (Multimedia Multiservice) switching systems and will supply Jordan Telecom with 40,000 new telephone lines. Deliveries will begin at the end of this year. The network extensions, deployed in the Amman area, are scheduled to be operational by the beginning of year 2002.

Pierre Mattei, CEO of Jordan Telecom, said: “The addition of Alcatel’s latest equipment in our network will help us meet the expected growth of the number of subscribers in the next few years. The agreement also strengthens the existing co-operation between Alcatel and Jordan Telecom.”

Elie Karioty, Alcatel’s sales director Middle East, Voice Networks activities, said: “The Alcatel 1000 MM will help Jordan Telecom extend and modernise its network, and become an even more successful player in its market.”

Alcatel, which has installed 40% of Jordan Telecom’s network, had supplied 90,000 telephones lines earlier this year. With this new network expansion, Jordan Telecom will be able to serve more than 850,000 subscribers.
