If the level of Internet penetration within the region is to be driven higher, local content issues have to be addressed, says a senior official with Etisalat business unit, Emirates Internet & Multimedia (EIM).

According to Abdulla Hashim, senior manager, development & sales with EIM, “the infrastructure issues in the UAE have been addressed."

“However, the next challenge is to develop content that is in the Middle East context,” he adds.

Currently, the Internet penetration in the UAE is estimated to be around 29% with approximately 250,000 dial-up users. Hashim believes that Internet penetration among residential users will reach a satiation point within the next 12 months, making business and government core areas for EIM.

“Delivering localised value added services is very important in these areas to drive adoption.” he adds.
