Symbol Technologies, a supplier of mobile computing solutions, is showing off an Arabic software layer for devices using the Windows CE operating system.

The xArab Toolkit is a suite of tools that helps developers Arabise applications with Arabic interface controls, a support library of conversion routines and a development methodology.

The xArab Toolkit, developed in partnership with Limra Infotech, contains a number of elements that maybe used together or independently. xArab DLL is a simple library of support routines used to convert Arabic texts between a number of formats; xArab Active-X is a control that can be placed on any dialog or form to support Arab text entry; xArab sample applications are a set of applications supplied in source code format to help the programmers understand the usage of the xArab toolkit.

Sunil Chadha, area manager of Symbol Technologies Middle East, said: "Workers can be very efficient if they can be in touch when on the move. Symbol is contributing to the transition from technology systems that are tied to a physical location to user-friendly devices that talk the language of the Middle East."

xArab does not change or replace the software modules of the Windows CE operating system. Rather it provides additional components and functions that enable Arabic text entry and display within the existing software.

The company's stand also includes partner efforts showing solutions for vertical markets such as the oil and gas industry, warehousing, retain and field services. Partners Idenste and Swisslog are showing applications that can reduce human error, speed up processes and extend back-end systems through mobile networked solutions and barcoding.

Idesta 2.0 Route Accounting is a multi-lingual open platform solution (supporting Arabic) for distribution organizations that have multiple global sites, also configurable to allow local business rules to be implemented.

Swisslog is demonstrating its cross-industry applications for the distribution and warehousing markets, using Symbol's NetVision wireless IP phones and wireless handheld computers.
