AFP and Reuters are reporting that former US president Bill Clinton has cancelled a trip to Dubai amid regional tension over US strikes on Afghanistan.

Clinton had been due in Dubai to host an awards ceremony which was to have rounded off an October 13-14 Science, Technology and Arts Royal Summit (STARS) of 400 government and industry leaders.

The inaugural annual ceremony, which was billed as the "Oscars" for the IT industry by its organiser, was last week postponed until early 2002 in the wake of the September 11 US terror attacks. The organisers say Clinton will attend the re-scheduled event.

"Mr. Clinton has cancelled his proposed trip to Dubai next week," due to the intenational situation, Charlotte Dent, a spokesperson for the organisers told AFP.

Following Clinton's cancellation, Al Gore has also announced that he will not be coming to Dubai for a Gitex conference.
