Quantel completed a large order to Dubai Television in September, as part of a more general expansion to the latter's facility in the UAE.

The order was for one PaintBox FX [formerly Quantel's HAL] and one EditBox FX. 5D's tailor-made visual effects software, Masher, was also purchased as a plug-in to the EditBox.

Shipped in early September, Dubai Television told DS that it plans to have the Quantel equipment fully operational by the middle of October.

Commented David Richardson, chief engineer Dubai TV: "We bought in the Quantel equipment primarily to create some nice 3-D graphics for the channel's promotions."

"Prior to this acquisition we had many Quantel products at the station, including two PaintBox FX's, nine PictureBox's and a further five EditBox's. We decided to go back simply because Quantel products are fast and easy to use."

According to Richardson, Dubai Television is looking at a number of system upgrades, most notably the delivery of a Master Control Room [MCR], which will increase the station's output capacity to eight channels.

Talking at this year's IBC in Amsterdam, Quantel's Steve Carpenter spoke about the growing importance of the Middle East region:

"The Middle East is certainly the biggest growth region this year for Quantel. It's what is underpinning a lot of our business at the moment. Many assume that the whole world is in recession, using as their barometer regions like the US and Europe. However, many are applying the same theory to the Middle East and this just isn't the case."
