As part of Dubai’s e-government initiative, the Dubai Chamber of Commerce and Industry (DCCI) has announced the launch of their portal in collaboration with Microsoft and DiverseInc. The site is currently accessible only to authorised members but will be made available to the public shortly.

The new portal is set to offer a range of online services that will enable the Chamber to serve its 60,000 odd members more efficiently. Mr. Khalid Al Kassim, director of IT at DCCI stated at the launch that the DCCI was committed to providing its “members with services that were aimed at enhancing their productivity and efficiency levels.” Services include the online submission of applications for essential documents by exporters such as Certificates of Origin, booking of conference rooms at DCCI’s premises, and registering regional and international events. Mr. Kassim promised that more services would be activated soon.

A shopping mall on the portal will allow members to purchase DCCI’s publications and directories online. However, a portion of the web site including research-based information on Dubai is accessible to the public as well.

Microsoft has been credited with providing the backbone for the portal both on the front-end service offerings side as well as the integration of DCCI’s existing systems. Dr. Gianni Zorzino, architectural consultant for Microsoft Consulting Services (MCS) mentioned that “the Intranet portal for DCCI employees was designed to address online requests as well as manage the dynamic content of the Internet portal.”

The site will be available in both English and Arabic but many of the online services touted at the launch are still to be activated on the portal.
