Shoman and Dr. El-Kuwaiz to get ABANA lifetime award

The Arab Bankers Association of North America, (ABANA), the not-for-profit organization headquartered in New York City will be hosting a lifetime achievement award honoring Dr. Abdullah El-Kuwaiz and Abdul Majeed Shoman for their contribution and leadership to the Arab banking community.

The Arab Bankers Association of North America, (ABANA), the not-for-profit organization headquartered in New York City will be hosting a lifetime achievement award honoring Dr. Abdullah El-Kuwaiz and Abdul Majeed Shoman for their contribution and leadership to the Arab banking community.

Ibrahim El-Kuwaiz is currently the Executive Director of the Islamic Development Bank and Chairman of Bosna Bank International and occupies directorships at the Oxford Energy Institute (UK), the Economic Research Forum for the Arab Countries, Iran and Turkey (Egypt), and is a member of the World Bank's Council of Advisors for the Middle East and North Africa.

Dr. El-Kuwaiz served in the Ministry of Finance and National Economy of Saudi Arabia for over twenty years and was most recently Deputy Minister for Economic Affairs, where he implemented government economic policies related to customs, promotion of national industries and the encouragement of foreign investments in the production and services sectors.

Abdul Majeed Shoman is Chairman and Chief Executive of Arab Bank, plc., which was founded in Jerusalem in 1930 by his father, Abdul Hameed Shoman. The bank is one of the oldest publicly held banks, with over 378 branches worldwide. Mr. Shoman also holds directorships at a number of other organizations, including Arab Palestinian Investment Bank, Arab Bank Investment Co. Ltd (London), Commercial Building Co. (Beirut), Arban Computing Investment Co. (Beirut), Arab Computing Company Ltd. (Amman) Jerusalem Development & Investment Co. Ltd. (Amman) Jordan Petroleum Refinery Co. Ltd (Amman), as well as the charitable Abdul Hameed Shoman Foundation (Amman).

The event will take place October 4, 2001 in New York. Previous recipients of the award include: HRH Prince Alwaleed Bin Talal Bin AbdulAziz Alsaud, Ghazi M. Abdul Jawad, - Mahmoud Abdel Aziz, Dr. Khaled M. Al-Fayez, - Ibrahim S. Dabdoub, Nemir A. Kirdar, Suliman S. Olayan and Mohamed Abdul Mohsin Al-Kharafi.

ABANA, which was founded in January 1983 by forty-five executives, involved with banking and financial institutions, organizes events and conferences in an effort to promote business interests of Arab bankers in North America. The organisation boasts a membership of over 300 individual members and 44 institutional members, including a number of US money center banks, Arab banks, investment banks, and organizations.
