According to the latest Gartner Dataquest figures, Sun Microsystems has retained its number one position in the worldwide Unix server market. In addition, the company has also managed to claim an additional four points in terms of market share, giving it a grand total of 55%.

The report shows that during Q2 of this year — the first quarter of volume shipments for the Sun Fire 3800, 4800 and 6800 servers — Sun’s latest offerings out shipped IBM's pSeries servers in units while it also outpaced Big Blue by almost 2:1 in total Unix revenue.

"We are delighted with these results, which reflect the strong growth we have continued to see in the Middle East, despite economic conditions elsewhere," says Denis Heraud, managing director, Sun Microsystems, Middle East Africa.

"Despite announcements of new products in calendar year 2000 from IBM and HP, our customers continue to see Sun as the network computing platform of choice, as these numbers clearly demonstrate," he adds.
