McAfee, a division of Network Associates, will launch its the WebShield E-500 offering at Gitex 2001. The WebShield E-500 appliance is the first multiple protocol virus security product from McAfee to combine both hardware and software in a single integrated solution.

"No other AV vendor has the true scalability, 100% detection and all in one appliance like McAfee does. Through benchmarks the E-500 outperformed, by far, in detection and scalability any of Trend's or Symantec's products.

In some sites where we installed demo units customers refused to give them back," says McAfee’s Thomas Mina.
The release comes at a time when over a quarter of today's security threats are Internet worms, which are both quick to strike and fast spreading.

However, up until now Internet worms have required some sort of input by the user — normally clicking on an attachment. "Code Red has added a new twist to the Internet worm. This threat — hacking technique and Internet worm combined — requires no user input," says Mina."It sits in memory and sneaks across the Internet on the back of HTTP communications between MS web-servers," he adds.

"The most effective place to detect the worm is when it tries to enter or leave the victim's system — in other words, at the Internet gateway! McAfee's WebShield E-500 appliance is purpose-built to protect against Code Red and the copy-cat variants that will undoubtedly follow," Mina explains.

In addition to the launch of WebShield E-500, it will also demonstrate its wide range of anti-virus software, plus its network security and network management products.

"Gitex 2001 is a key time for Network Associates to engage in face-to-face selling, solution selling, brand building, and product and technology awareness to our highly qualified end user base in a comparison-rich environment," adds McAfee’s Mina.
