Gulf Insurance Company goes live

The Gulf Insurance Company (GIC) has ‘gone live’ with the first phase of its comprehensive Internet strategy.

The Gulf Insurance Company (GIC) has ‘gone live’ with the first phase of its comprehensive Internet strategy. Using an Oracle platform and Insyst Technologies’ PREMIA solution, the company has reengineered its legacy applications into a corporate intranet to allow Internet and wireless customer access to insurance records and services.

“Because we have offices throughout Kuwait as well as customers and partners who demand 24 x 7 access to their insurance records and to our insurance services, the GIC required a technology partner with a secure, reliable Internet platform that could scale upwards as our business grows,” says Osama Tyoan, GIC’s IT manager.

This platform was provided by an integrated Oracle platform. Working from this platform, GIC’s application developers, in cooperation with Insyst, used Oracle’s JDeveloper Java development environment to create core applications that can be accessed on GIC’s corporate intranet by staff members from all of the organisation’s locations.

The next phase of the deployment will allow GIC’s customers and partners to access these bilingual applications via the Internet as well as wireless (WAP) technology using their mobile phones.

"The GIC also needed an Internet software platform that would enable us to develop bilingual solutions, as our staff, clients, and partners wanted both English and Arabic functionality. Oracle’s integrated platform meant that we didn’t need to cobble together diverse offerings from a variety of vendors. We are currently using Oracle 8i Database, Oracle 9i Application Server and Oracle JDeveloper. With the successful implementation of the first phase of GIC’s Internet strategy, we’re now ready to bring the same highly-available online services to our customers and partners,” says Tyoan.

Phase one of the GIC’s Internet strategy included the development and deployment of Internet-based applications for its group life, group medical, accounting, and life insurance divisions. The second phase will include further application for motor insurance, property insurance, and marine insurance, as well as Internet access for the GIC’s clients and insurance partners.

The final stage of GIC’s online initiative will be the creation of wireless applications that enable customers and partners to access critical insurance information from mobile phones and other wireless devices, as well as through the Internet.
