Etisalat signs up for free VoATM trials with Alcatel

The UAE's monopoly service provider is all set to begin free Voice over ATM trials by the end of the year. The trials are part of Etisalat's Next Generation Network Evaluation program.

Etisalat, the UAE’s monopoly service provider, has struck a deal with Alcatel, to conduct free ‘voice over ATM’ (VoATM) trials in Dubai. The field trial, which is part of Etisalat’s 'Next Generation Network evaluation program in the UAE, is scheduled to begin at the end of the year.

“The evolution towards next generation networks will enable Etisalat to quickly introduce new services and to manage more efficiently the convergence of voice and data traffic in its network,” says Essa Mohammed Al Haddad, general manager of Etisalat.

“This field trial will allow us to assess the range of benefits that Alcatel’s NGN platform,” he added.

The two-stage field trial will build on Etisalat’s installed base of Alcatel's ATM-based 7470 Multiservice platform (MSP). Stage one will include testing of Alcatel’s VoATM solution, based on the Alcatel 7470 MSP.

The Alcatel 1000 Softswitch and the Alcatel 5620 Network Manager, will initially be tested with limited live traffic.

The second stage of field-testing will include the integration of Alcatel’s VoATM solution into Etisalat’s live network.

“This trial is proof that Alcatel is driving the next generation network revolution,” says Pierre-Alain Cadillon, Alcatel's recently appointed country senior officer for the UAE & Oman.
“Alcatel’s solutions will bring to Etisalat a future proof migration path, enhance their circuit switched networks towards multiservice packet-based network.”

The Alcatel NGN portfolio of applications supports internet offload, VPN management, class 4 transit applications and VoIP services.
