Unilever has upgraded the status of its Jebel Ali Lipton tea bag factory to that of a strategic sourcing site for its global beverages business. The move will see local production of the Lipton Yellow Label Tea Bag brand increase by close to 30% to meet the demands of key worldwide markets.

“When the factory was set up two years ago, our yearly production target was worth AED 450 million of tea bags destined purely for the GCC markets,” explains Tim Drury, Lipton factory manager. “Due to the reliability and success of the factory, we will now be producing an additional AED 130 million of exports per annum for Lipton worldwide markets.”

The announcement is a major victory for Litopn’s regional operations and Jebel Ali Free Zone. The factory’s success has been attributed to numerous factors, including the free zone’s infrastructure and Dubai’s location near tea growing countries. These two factors allow inventory to be kept low, and for raw materials and finished products to be moved in and out quickly.

“Our proximity to countries like Kenya, India and Sri Lanka means that we receive the freshest possible teas for the world famous Lipton Yellow Label,” says Drury. “Another advantage from being located in Dubai is that low cost packaging of a very high quality is available locally in the UAE.”

The factory has recently been accredited with the international quality management standard, ISO 9002. It has also received ISO 14001 certification for its achievements in helping protect the environment.

“We are very proud that one of the major manufacturing companies located in the Free Zone has achieved such success," said Sultan Bin Sulayem, executive chairman, Ports, Customs & Free Zone Corporation. “It is proof that the quality of service provided by the Free Zone can be translated into increased business opportunities.”
