Dubai Municipality has upgraded its departmental level network attached storage (NAS) facilities using Allion Technologies hardware. Storage area network (SAN) technology is still being used for mission critical systems, but the Allion built FISC CDH 9 Bay Tower is being used for backing up directories, user directories, file servers and CD servers.

“We evaluated a lot of NAS boxes which ranged in price dramatically for the same capacity, so we had to choose on features, reliability and redundancy,” says Basil Jaradat, head of operations, information technology department, Dubai Municipality

The Allion solution turned out to be the best option for the workgroup on a price performance/capacity basis.

“It may not have all the features of other providers but it costs one fifth of the price. Features are only important if you need them,” he explains.

What the NAS box does have is a limited version of the NT operating system running on it that handles file identification and security. It allows the 5,000 people working at the Municipality from around 2,000 desktops to access information at the same time.

“Allion also had IDE based NAS boxes and that is what we wanted – even if it is not as fast SCSI,” says Jaradat.

Another important factor for the Municipality was simplicity and the ability to ‘plug and play’. The prime reason for this being the lack of skilled people in the market place. Reliability is also important, “because I want to go home at night and there not be a problem when I get back in the morning,” he says.

Jaradat is not sure which storage technologies the Municipality will use in the future. He professes no particular vendor loyalty and explains that the solution he chooses “depends on the project in hand.”
