The Ministry of Interior in Saudi Arabia has deployed an internet protocol (IP)-based communication solution from converged communications provider Mitel.

The ministry has selected Mitel’s IP system for its public security division as the first step in modernising its tele- communication system.

The division is the first within the ministry to adopt anall-IP solution.

Mitel will supply its flagship 3300 Mxe-controller as well as XML-and HTML-enabled IP devices.

It will also provide softphones with integrated conferencing and collaboration tools.

Mitel beat a number of rivals to win the contract, worth in the region of US$30,000.

The Mitel solution matched “not only our current needs, but [was] also capable of addressing those of our future expansion and IP-networking requirements kingdom-wide,” commented Abdulrahman Al Shenaifi, senior advisor, Information Technology and Security, at the Office of theAssistant for Security Affairs, at the ministry.

Al Shenaifi said the IP solution would improve efficiency as well as bring cost savings.

“It will help public security speed up the communication process between the divisions throughout the country and also cut the cost,” he said in an interview with IT Weekly.

He predicted that other divisions of the ministry were also likely to implement IP technology, as the ministry gradually moved away from its current time-divisional multiplexing (TDM) system.

“This is a small step to expanding throughout other branches of the public security,” Al Shenaifi said.

“We are building this as the base and then we will expand several fold.”

Commenting on the deal, Hisham El Amili, Mitel general manager GCC, also attributed the win of the ministry contract to the company’s expertise in IP telephony, which he claimed gave it the edge over its competitors in the sector.
