A potentially satirical court hearing in the UAE has concluded with the conviction of a Jordanian electrician for illegally using Etisalat services.

The court heard that an administrative office for a spaceship fairground ride — which was installed in Dubai’s Creek Park during the Dubai Shopping Festival — was connected into Etisalat’s network. Prosecutors explained that after the Creek Park fair shut down, the line was disconnected. However, it was later illegally re-connected into the park office by the defendant.

Two unnamed companies then started receiving charges for international calls made after midnight even though their offices were closed at the time. Those calls were shown to have been made via the illegal connection.

The Jordanian electrician was fined Dhs 10,000 for making international calls and using the Internet through a telephone line that he illegally connected himself.

The spaceship vanished from the Park earlier this year.
