Gulf News Online, the website of the popular Dubai-based English Language newspaper, has been shut down after it was attacked by hackers believed to be pro-Israeli activists.

The site was taken off line yesterday after the intrusion, described by the paper as “appalling,” was detected.

In a statement, the paper blamed the hacking on “Zionist activists believed to be based in Israel.” Managers believe that Gulf News attracted the hackers’ attention because of its extensive coverage of alleged Israeli atrocities in Palestine and the West Bank.

The site is hosted in the United States.

Cyberspace has become a virtual battleground for Israelis and Palestinians since violence escalated in the region last year, with numerous reports of Web users on both sides spamming and hacking their opponent’s sites.
