Sun Microsystems Middle East and Brocade Communications Systems have announced that they will expand their reseller agreements to the Middle East. The deal will allow Sun to sell Brocade’s fibre channel switches in preconfigured solutions in the region. The two will also work more closely on developing storage configurations and on software development.

The initiative is intended to drive the uptake of open systems storage solutions. Brocade’s SilkWorm fabric switches have already been approved for use with Sun’s StorEdge T3 and A5X00 storage arrays, and further pre-tested SAN configurations are being developed.

"This announcement supports one of Sun's most important strategies, which is to provide the 'open integratable stack.' Sun has long been a leading driver for open systems, a strategy that contributes to our leadership in the server market," said Nigel Girling, General Manager, Sun Professional Services , Middle East Africa.

"In order to keep pace with this region's growing expectations for non-stop business operations, network components must be highly integratable to maximize performance, simplify growth and minimize downtime caused by poorly architected systems. The combination of clearly defined interfaces between independent modules within an open integratable stack and 'best of breed' component qualification provides safe-investment options to customers." said Girling.

Sun will be offering sales and technical support in the region for Brocade’s intelligent software platform, that enables better performance, enhanced security and simplified management of large SANs. The two are also committed to development of a Common Information Model (CIM) using Brocade, which will allow developers to write SAN management applications on open CIM standards.

"Brocade is pleased to partner closely with Sun in this region to deliver supported, storage networking solutions to Sun storage environments," said Jean Marie Mathiot, VP, Brocade Europe Middle East and Africa. "Working with Sun to enable one-stop support for Sun and Brocade SAN solutions has created a win/win for end users in the Middle East. Many of the Brocade SANs in use today are deployed in Sun environments - by expanding our relationship with Sun, we can provide the highest level of support to our mutual customers."
