Arabian first for BBC

The BBC has produced the first 'Trimedia' broadcast from Kuwait. The 'New Horizons'show was streamed to the Web, shown on TV and broadcast on radio.

The BBC has broadcast what it believes to be the region's first "Tri-media" interactive webcast from Kuwait City. "New Horizons", a discussion on electronic information delivery in the Middle East, was streamed across the Web by and broadcast simultaneously on Kuwait TV and BBC Arabic radio across the Arab world and on 90.1 FM in Kuwait.

Sheikh Ahmed Al Fahd Al Sabah, Kuwaiti Minister of Information said: "This open discussion on the web, on TV and on radio is a sign of our recognition that the way ahead for information delivery is media convergence. Through this event we have actively shown that the Kuwaiti media is ready to respond to the challenges of the new online world. We are pleased to have had this opportunity to extend our special relationship with the BBC, building on the recent launch of BBC Arabic on 90.1 FM to a new partnership on the web."

The joint event was part of the activities celebrating Kuwait's selection as the Arab Culture Capital 2001. Internet users, TV viewers and radio listeners, from Kuwait and across the Arab world, joined the debate via email.

After the webcast, Hosam Sokkari, Head of, who chaired the interactive discussion, said: "This multi-faceted casting operation from Kuwait was a major step towards media convergence in the Middle East. We, in, are keen to come up with innovative forms of information delivery and finding the right content for the new formats. continues to explore information boundaries to meet the demands of our users.
