MobiNil gains its wings with EgyptAir

EgyptAir passengers will soon be able to check flight times, book tickets and even track lost bags via WAP and SMS after the airline signed an agreement with MobiNil.

Passengers on EgyptAir will soon be able to keep track of flight and ticket information via their mobile phones.

MobiNil, Egypt’s largest mobile operator, will work with the country’s national airline to provide users with the latest news through IVR, IS-SMS and WAP systems.

“We were always keen to offer mobile phone applications that would provide maximum benefits to our subscribers,” said MobiNil president and CEO Osman Sultan.

“We don’t want mobile phones to be used merely as vehicles to transmit voice but to also access information in the financial and banking sectors, restaurants, cinemas, aviation and any other service that helps to improve the quality of life for our subscribers.”

One of the many features on offer will be a lost luggage tracking service. If a passenger sends details of any missing bags via an SMS message, he or she will receive a reply showing where the bag was last spotted.

EgyptAir is currently working on an online booking service, which, when complete, will also be available to WAP users.

“In the year 2000 alone, EgyptAir has transported five million passengers, making it one of the largest aviation companies in the Middle East and Africa,” said chairman Muhammad Fahim Rayyan, who added that he hopes the use of new technology would help boost passenger numbers further.
