Egyptian mobile operator MobiNil is celebrating “one of the best quarters in company history” after recording a huge jump in subscriber numbers in the first quarter of this year.

The network now has just under 1.5 million users, a rise of 250,000 since the end of 2000.

Unsurprisingly, revenues are up to: US $152 million in the first four months of 2001, up 19% on the same period last year.

“During the first quarter of 2001, we have witnessed the confirmation of our adopted growth strategy,” said MobiNil president and CEO Osman Sultan.

“This quarter has been one of the best quarters in terms of new subscribers in the history of the company.

“We focused on maintaining our market share leadership, sustaining our profitability, while improving our operational efficiency and increasing the capability of our network to address future growth.”

As well as increasing the number of subscribers, MobiNil has also been beefing up its infrastructure. The company added a new switch earlier this year, and has plans to install two more before December to further increase the network’s capacity.
