Dubai-based IBM partner, United Computer and Management Consultancy (UCMC) got the green light from the American Life Insurance Company (ALICO) to put together the building blocks for that customer’s e-business strategy, the company said.

The solution will comprise the region’s first IBM AS/400 server model 820, which UCMC says will give ALICO the elbow room it needs to cope with increased business opportunities based on projected growth in the insurance industry in the Middle East region.

The project includes the installation of the IBM AS/400 Model 820; an Infoprint Printer 40; an IBM 6400 for volume printing; OS/400 and On Demand Software for document archival.

“As an existing IBM AS/400 customer ALICO was keen to select a platform which would help the company migrate its core business applications to a web-based Java environment. The challenge for us was to ensure that security, scalability, performance, and reliability are not compromised,” said Pappu Rao, client manager at UCMC.

“We will use the IBM AS/400 820 server to develop a number of e-business applications in order for us to extend our marketing reach to the Web,” said Nakhle Joun, regional IT manager, ALICO. “We intend to acquire an IBM 8xx production system in the near future, which will be used to centralise and control the electronic operations of several branches across the region.”
