Dubai Internet City-headquartered Haroun Multimedia (HMM) plans to launch three dedicated ethnic entertainment portals from the technology free zone at the beginning of next year. HMM, involved with videos used in the launch of Dubai Media City, has moved into Dubai Internet City to drive the second-phase of its corporate development strategy.

The three portals,, and, will require a start-up investment of nearly US $1 million. HMM hopes to get financial support from UK entertainment industry backers.

“In looking for financial backing, we did not position ourselves as a dotcom company because our portals are really on-line marketing channels for a new breed of ethnic cartoon entertainment characters and channels,” said Wassim Haroun, HMM’s chief executive officer. “At present we are a service provider but we are now looking at also being a content provider,” he added.

Haroun believes the Middle East is suffering from a desperate lack of world-class content.

“This is where the pioneering synergy will succeed, by bringing together a community which will spark innovative content which can be internationally tested on Dubai’s multi-cultural population,” said Haroun. “All three will be fun portals and will be ageless in appeal,” he added.

HMM has designed a cartoon character for its portal which will offer content in French, English and some African languages.
