DMC opens its arms to freelancers

Dubai Media City today took the wraps off its eagerly-awaited strategy for freelance media professionals.

For a charge of AED 19,000 in the first year, freelancers can now start work in the free zone’s new purpose-built Media Business Centre.

For your money you get DMC’s sponsorship, plus various facilities, including usage of a workspace and PC; administrative services; and access to a library, gym and coffee shop. Power, lighting and AC is included in the cost.

The AED 19,000 fee breaks down into an ‘annual fee’ of AED 6000, an annual ‘licensing fee’ of AED 8000 and a ‘joining fee’ of AED 5000.

The joining fee is not paid after year one, bringing the annual cost down to AED 14,000.

Each PC in the centre comes loaded with Microsoft Office, but Internet access charges and additional software such as Photoshop must be paid for by the freelancer.

Saeed Al Muntafiq, chief executive of DMC, said that the centre is a key step in Dubai’s goal to become a regional media hub.

“We are providing freelancers the chance to operate in a hassle free environment where sponsorship and visa procedures will be simple and easy to process,” said Al Muntafiq. “It will give Dubai a base for a pool of freelance talent that can be easily accessed across the region and enhance our growing reputation as the fastest growing media centre in the region.”

Two freelancers that have already signed up to the Media Business Centre formally endorsed it at its launch.

Barry Kirsch, a musical composer, welcomed the opportunity to interact with other creative professionals. “It’s the only place to be if you’re a serious professional in the entertainment industry,’ said Kirsch. “The interaction is the absolute key thing from my point of view.”

Sofian Hijjawi, a graphic designer, said the centre provided an opportunity to develop Arab media talent. “Dubai Media City will provide the ideal location for Arab talent to thrive,” he said. “It will give me and my freelance colleagues a place where inspiration, creativity and excellence can thrive.”

There are currently eighty workstations in the open-plan Media Business Centre. The adjoining Executive Offices provide closed workspaces of varying sizes which are charged for by the square foot.
