In the face of customer demand for centralised storage solutions that allow them to use their resources more effectively HP has consolidated its storage management software solutions at a global level.

HP says the move was motivated primarily by market trends which indicate that companies are looking for solutions that help them manage myriad storage devices and deal with the unpredictable growth demands created by the Internet.

It also comes close on the heels of the launch of HP’s overall FSAM (Federated Storage Area Management) strategy, which it introduced to the market last month.

Gary de Menezes, software business manager for Africa and the Middle East at HP, says that by bringing technologies from the company’s Network Storage Solutions Organisation (NSSO) and OpenView Business Unit under the same umbrella, HP is able to offer a more comprehensive storage management solution.

"We can now help partners and customers deal with the challenges of managing direct-attached and network-attached storage devices, SAN devices, backup and HSM software – and we can help them with the overall network and systems management strategies."

Storage management is an arena that HP feels does not receive the level of market attention it requires. Companies understand that data is one of their most important assets, yet repeatedly it seems that they do not invest in the appropriate solutions, says De Menezes.

"Previously, our software management solutions were offered separately from the hardware platform," he explains. "This worked well but, with this announcement, partners and customers will benefit by receiving a complete solution from a single organisation."

Locally, the move will see HP’s software and enterprise hardware sales teams working more closely on joint customer potentials.

"With the integration of our two divisions, we are hoping to generate even greater market awareness of the need to manage and integrate storage software and devices."
