Imagine your favourite international newspaper delivered to your hotel door at the same time it hits the stands in its respective country. That is the service offered to customers at the Burj Al Arab hotel, courtesy of Hewlett-Packard and Canadian company Newspaper Direct.

Newspaper Direct has deals with 130 worldwide daily newspapers, and receives the print files at the same time as they go to the presses, thus enabling them to send the respective newspaper files in pdf format to the hotels for printing in accordance with guest specifications.

“It is nothing complex, all you require is a server, PC and printer,” said Christoph Schell, commercial director, Hewlett-Packard, Middle East. “The A3 sized paper is printed overnight in the IT department and delivered to guests allowing them to remain up-to-date with the latest news, rather than having to wait 48 hours for the actual newspapers to arrive.”

The bundled solution was introduced to the Burj Al Arab on March 5th and according to Schell, it’s a service they are looking to extend throughout Dubai and Middle East hotels.

“HP is looking into the mid-market at the moment and this is a simple solution in a box,” said Schell. The spin-off benefit to the company, he adds, is that once hotel guests realise this service is possible, they may look at the business opportunities of using similar solutions, or simply buy it for their home.
