SGI launches high performance workstations and servers

SGI will unveil its next-generation Intel processor based workstations, at the upcoming Saudi Computer 2001.

SGI will unveil its next-generation Intel processor based workstations and servers, at the upcoming Saudi Computer 2001. The SGI machines running either Windows or Linux operating systems will be displayed in conjunction with SGI’s new partner in the Kingdom, Networks for PC Services.

The SGI technology showcased at Saudi Computer 2001 will include the SGI 230, 330, 550 and 1200 workstation ranges, as well as Zx10 professional machines and SGI’s flat panel monitors.

"The adoption of the Internet, and the increase in the size and scope of graphics and multimedia files used in business today, mean that Saudi organisations have an increasing need for graphics-intensive hardware," said Fadi Abi Akl, business development manager of workstations and Intel processor based servers, SGI, Middle East & North Africa.

He added, “SGI’s next initiative will be to introduce SGI’s 110 and 1200 ranges of Internet servers, specifically designed to support demanding solutions including Internet infrastructure, Web serving, messaging and e-commerce.”

The new SGI workstations on display at Saudi Computer 2001, including the Silicon Graphics 230, Silicon Graphics 330 and Silicon Graphics 550, accelerate OpenGL graphics functions such as hardware transform and lighting, texture mapping and anti-aliasing, allowing users to bring increased realism to 3D models. These features are are available for the first time on a workstation for Linux users.

Speaking on the partnership between SGI and Networks for PC Services, Fawaz Al-Mahraj, managing director, Networks for PC Services, said, “together with our local consultancy and support, we are able to provide clients with a total solution.
