Petroleum Development Oman (PDO) has signed a preferred supplier agreement with HP under which the vendor will provide the oil producer with IT infrastructure over the next five years.

The deal with Oman’s largest oil and natural gas producer is worth “tens of millions of dollars” and covers the replacement of servers, desktops, notebooks, handhelds, workstations, printers and storage infrastructure.

HP will also install its network management software OpenView at PDO and provide support services for the duration of the contract.

The partnership was announ- ced at a news conference during last month’s Gitex trade show.

Ibtisam Al Riyami, IT manager at PDO, told the conference that there were three main factors in going with HP.

“Our main drivers for choosing HP were reliability, we cannot afford any down time, security and total cost of ownership (TCO). Cost was a big consideration,” Al Riyami said, adding that there was also a heavy emphasis on the services side of the agreement.

She said PDO had under-taken an 18-month study before reaching a decision on the preferred supplier.

Saif Naaman, head of custom- er services at PDO, added that under the agreement the oil producer would also be able to implement new HP technology before other customers. “The deal will make sure we are one of the early adopters of HP technology,” Naaman stated.

Anil Gandhi, PSG general manager, HP Middle East, described the agreement as a business partnership and said HP would work with PDO and incorporate its input into any solutions that the vendor provided.

“HP has been working with PDO for nearly 25 years and through out new partnership, are committed to making sure the PDO IT department is up to date with the latest technology available and ensure they get the right training to maximise the benefits from our solutions,” said Gandhi.
