While the desktop PC market is showing signs of weakness, the notebook market is powering ahead.

Preliminary data in an end of year report from Dataquest shows that fourth quarter notebook shipments grew 21% over the same period in 1999. This compares to a global increase in desktop sales of only 1.6%

IBM topped the best sellers list for notebooks with 13.5% market share. Beaten by a whisker for the top spot was Dell, which netted 13% after picking-up 1.5% over the previous year.

Toshiba, which came second for 1999 sales lost a place to come third with 12.5%, while Compaq slipped from third to fourth with 12%.
