Trials of Etisalat’s General Packet Radio Service GPRS are continuing in the UAE with the latest test achieving a data transfer rate of 35 kbits/s to a mobile phone.

The test, which was made over Alcatel Evolium infrastructure, represents a four-fold increase in speed over the current transfers being achieved over the UAE’s GSM network.

Trials will continue until the commercial launch of Etisalat’s GPRS service some time this year, according to officials.

The aim of those trials will be to push up speeds as close as possible to the physical limit of GPRS technology, which is pegged at 115-kbit/s.
