Y2000 online B2C sales meet predictions

Total business to consumer sales expected to top $56 billion in 2000; $9 billion expected to be sold over December holiday period

Worldwide online business to consumer sales in 2000 should be worth around $56 billion, according to ActivMedia Research. The company says this is in line with predictions that it made at the start of the year 2000.

When the final numbers come in, ActivMedia believes that around $9 billion of that total will have been spent during the end of year holiday season. The company believes that 57% of all consumer-oriented Web sites are now selling products and taking orders online.

"E-commerce activity is really starting to pick up steam," says Chris Anne Wheeler, vice president of information services at ActivMedia Research. "Online order processing systems are maturing to the point where e-tailers that invest in online and offline promotional activities are reaping the rewards with significant increases. Overall it takes time to become profitable online and those who implement solid business plans to support reasonable sales volumes should do well online going forward."

The leading player in the B2C sector, Amazon.com, said it expected to announce fourth quarter sales of around $960 million. That would be a 40% rise over the previous year's fourth quarter turnover of $676 million. "I thought the news was good news for the company, especially given the retail environment disasters we've seen this past season," Kristine Koerber, an analyst with WR Hambrecht, told news.com.
