Vodafone AirTouch Plc announces today that its wholly owned subsidiary Vodafone Kenya Ltd. has signed an agreement with Telkom Kenya to form Safaricom Ltd. Safaricom will be owned 60% by Telkom Kenya and 40% by Vodafone AirTouch.

The deal includes all the assets and subscribers of the previous cellular operation of Telkom Kenya. The consideration for the licence from the Kenyan Government amounted to $55 million.

Safaricom is currently the only cellular operator in Kenya and has a 15 year GSM 900 licence. Safaricom has also acquired the existing ETACS network which provides service in the major towns in Kenya.

ETACS is the pre GSM analogue technology that kicked off the mobile phone explosion back in the late 1980s.
