qatar telecommunications provider Qtel is trialling a mobile broadcasting service during this month’s 15th Asian Games, which are being staged in Doha. The trial, which is based on the DVB-H standard, is designed to showcase the quality of the technology, with a view to introducing a commercial service next year. Qtel has distributed almost 1,400 DVB-H-enabled handsets to a select group of customers for use in the trial. Live programming from Qatar TV, CNN and Al Jazeera is being broadcast during the trial. Major handset vendors have shown strong interest in developing mobile TV handsets, including Nokia, Samsung Mobile and LG Electronics, each of which have been involved in separate trials in various markets worldwide.
