Networking player 3Com has unveiled a new wireless, session initiation protocol (SIP) based IP phone that it claims offers business users greater mobility by delivering full-featured voice over IP (VoIP) on a wireless LAN. The 3Com 3108 wireless phone, which operates on a wireless LAN (802.11b/g) infrastructure, enables users to roam a building or campus environment and stay connected with customers, partners and colleagues while utilising VoIP, wireless e-mail and data applications. According to 3Com, the benefits of the phone include ensuring that users are connected to the business’s phone system and can receive calls destined for their desks regardless of where they are in the building or campus environment. 3Com reckons that its latest kit is ideal for people working in jobs that require a mobile workforce such as education, government, healthcare and retail. Users can use the 3108 wireless phone to transfer calls to other departments, gain access to a live receptionist and listen to office voicemail. These are delivered with none of the expensive per minute usage fees associated with cellular phone use.
