Vendors work on wireless standard

LG, Panasonic, NEC, Samsung, SiBeam, Sony and Toshiba have banded together to begin developing a high definition (HD) wireless standard in a bid to make HD hardware a more appealing proposition for consumers.

The seven firms aim to make use of the unlicensed 60GHz frequency band and plan to name the standard WiHD or Wireless HD. The companies reckon this wireless standard will make setting up high definition-ready home theatre systems a much easier task, as cabling will no longer prove a limiting factor between source and destination devices.

HP releases PC management tool

HP has introduced a solution to ease the management of desktop environments and lower costs. HP said its Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) provided customers with a cost-efficient desktop environment by consolidating physical desktop PCs onto one server centrally hosted and managed within the data centre.
The solution combines HP hardware and management software with services and partner components from companies such as VMware.

“HP is bringing advanced desktop virtualisation capabilities into the reach of mainstream IT for cost-effective management of desktop environments,” said Nick van der Zweep, director of virtualisation at HP’s Technology Solutions Group.
