Emulex has teamed up with Intel to introduce the industry’s first family of embedded storage processor products that integrate support for all three serial storage protocols — fibre channel, serial attached SCSI (SAS) and serial advanced technology attachment (SATA) — within a single device.

Designed for storage system providers that want to build flexibility into their external storage systems, Emulex said its new family of storage processors provided a fully integrated, high performance solution to support a broad range of entry-level to enterprise-class storage systems.

The new family of products — Emulex IOP 502M, Emulex IOC 504 and Emulex IOP 504 — are multi-application, multi-protocol, software compatible solutions, which are the result of a joint development agreement with Intel.

“Multi-protocol technologies let storage companies grow and adapt their systems without excessive cost,” said Hans Geyer, vice president and general manager of Intel Storage Group.

“Intel and Emulex have collaborated on building multi-protocol storage products based on each other’s strengths to provide OEMs [original equipment manufacturers]the cost and time-to-market advantage of investing in one piece of hardware and use it for different interface protocols.”

The Emulex family of storage processors leverages underlying technology from the Intel IOP34x storage family and its 90nm technology, along with Emulex’s protocol engines and a common software interface for simplified migration.

“As storage system OEMs transition their solutions to integrate support for new storage protocols and disk drives, Emulex is at the forefront of this development effort providing a suite of products that deliver the flexibility and multi-protocol support — all within a single device — that helps reduce development time and cost,” said Mike Smith, executive vice president of worldwide marketing at Emulex.

“This announcement represents the first SAS/SATA protocol products to be released from Emulex and serves as a testament to our vision of providing storage system OEMs with the most complete portfolio of integrated embedded storage networking products.”

The new multi-protocol Emulex IOC/IOP products offer storage system providers an implementation that scales from entry-level fibre channel systems to enterprise-class FICON front-end storage area network (SAN) connection, and also support fibre channel, SAS and SATA within a single device for back-end disk connections.
