The proportion of households in the UK with broadband is set to almost double in the next three years, according to research from Point Topic.

The installed base of broadband lines in the country will increase from 9.77 million to 18.46 million including business lines, according to Point Topic’s first spatial broadband forecasts.

“Our figures show how hugely successful broadband has been in the UK,” Point Topic CEO Tim Johnson said, reported Vnunet online news service.

“Only three years ago, one analyst was forecasting that it would take until 2008 for broadband to reach 35% of British households. That milestone was passed last January.”

Remote rural areas will experience the fastest growth, although the highest take-up will continue to be in the south east of England, Point Topic said.
