Siemens Communications has signed a global frame agreement with Mobitel Sudan, part of MTC Group, worth US$25million.

The telecommunications provider will supply Mobitel Sudan with 2.5G radio wireless infrastructure under the terms of the deal.

Commenting on the contract Jan Cron, vice president, Siemens Communications Mobile Networks Middle East, said: “This agreement reinfor- ces our commitment to providing the most up-to-date telecommunication technologies to consumers across the region.”

“Mobitel is a market leader, with a market share of nearly 70% and we are particularly proud of our long-standing relationship with MTC.”

The partnership between Siemens and MTC goes back several years and includes work on MTC’s operations in Kuwait, Lebanon, Jordan and Bahrain.

“Siemens provides end to end solutions that guarantee high quality mobile telecommunications,” said Khaled Muhtadi, general manager, Mobitel Sudan.

“We are constantly impressed by the level of service we receive from Siemens.”

“The MTC Group has an aggressive profitable expansion strategy that must be supported by partners capable of providing the latest wireless technology to our fast growing operations,” Muhtadi added.

Siemens said that the products it will use for the contract are equipped with the latest GSM and Edge features, which provide the consumer with high quality voice and high-speed data on the Siemens platform of 2.5G, BSS products including HC BSC/TRAU and BS240XL.

Kuwaiti mobile operator MTC took full control of Sudanese GSM operator Mobitel in February.

Working through its pan-African operation Celtel International, MTC acquired the 61% stake in Mobitel that it did not already own from Sudatel, in a deal worth US$1.33 billion.

Saad Al Barrak, MTC managing director, said at the time that he expected to add over one million customers in Sudan over the course of the year.

Mobitel is the number one mobile operator in Sudan with over two million subscribers. Bashair Telecom, which had 302,900 subscribers as of the end of January 2006, is the country’s only other operator.

Sudan itself represents one of MTC’s largest markets in terms of population, counting 34.4 million inhabitants.

MTC Group is the fastest growing mobile operator in the region with operations in 20 countries across the Middle East and Africa region.
