Consolidation remains the name of the game in the enterprise system management software market, not only throughout 2005 but well into 2006, and is likely to continue for some years to come.

"IBM clearly stands out as the leading IT vendor in the market during 2005, and also made significant acquisitions, most notably of Micromuse," says Tonny Rasmussen, programme manager with IDC's European Software group.

"However, all solution suite vendors made significant acquisitions, consolidating their positions in this rather mature market,” explains Rasmussen. “All the signs in 2006 so far indicate a continuation in the surge of consolidation activities, although this is no guarantee of market domination as solution standards potentially change the system management environment.”

Providing profiles of the leading vendors, the study reveals the performance across seven regions within Western Europe for the top 10 vendors.

An IDC leadership grid is included that graphically depicts the leadership potential of various vendors by assessing a number of competitive factors. Standing out at the top of the grid are players such as IBM, HP, CA, and BMC.
