Indian IT service company Wipro has won the contract to implement a prestigious business intelligence project for a Saudi Arabian university, ITP.net can exclusively reveal.

The King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals (KFUPM) decided on Wipro for the contract after a prolonged evaluation process, the university's project manager Iftikhar Nadeem told ITP.net

It considered around eight vendors in total for the multi-million Saudi riyal contract with other applicants including Satyam and IBM.

"We have a very comprehensive criteria to evaluate vendors. The top things were the team who had the best experience in the region and the price," Nadeem said.

The business intelligence project, implementation of which is due to start in July and to last for a year, consists of Oracle's E-business suite, SunGard Higher Education's banner solution, and a reporting tool from Cognos.

The university, which is located in Dhahran, will be scoring a first in the region with the project, according to Nadeem.

"We are the first to embark on a BI project in higher education in the Middle East as far as we know," Nadeem said. "BI projects are more common in banking and finance. It is very uncommon in higher education."

He said the business intelligence solution would enable the university to mine the data it has on its 9,000 students. This could be used for a range of purposes; for instance, it could help to identify trends on student performance.

The creation of the business intellience system is part of the university's RAED project, which involves the modernisation of its enterprise resource planning applications.

Another strand to the project was the establishment of an online portal.
