US services giant EDS has won a seven year contract to run IT services for Qatar Foundation, the non-profit body set up to promote education and research in the kingdom.

The agreement, the value of which was not disclosed, will see EDS assume responsibility for a Tier IV data centre, which it said was the first such centre to be built outside North America, and for Qatar Foundation's IT services. EDS will provide end-to-end technology services, including service desk, infrastructure management and service delivery.

"This agreement is a milestone in our IT strategic plan and will expedite our ability to supply service excellence to the members of Qatar Foundation; it further aids us by creating another channel under the Foundation's umbrella to help transform the State into a knowledge based society," said Rashid Al Naimi, vice president - Administration for Qatar Foundation.

"We are delighted to engage with Qatar Foundation as our Anchor Client in Qatar for the supply of world class IT services to the Foundation & the State of Qatar," said Charles Cox, regional vice president for EDS Middle East & Africa.

EDS said the deal also reinforces its presence in the Middle East. Regionally, the services firm said it and its affiliates in Qatar, UAE and Bahrain employ nearly 700 professional staff, of which almost half are GCC nationals.
