Bahraini operator Mena Telecom is finalising plans to roll out a WiMax wireless communications network across the kingdom, it said yesterday.

The telco said it has been working closely with a number of unnamed technology suppliers and is in the final stage of negotiations on the project.

“We are finalising plans to roll out a state-of-the-art WiMax network,” stated Abdulhakeem Al Khayyat, chairman of Mena Telecom.

“Our aim is to bring the latest technology in the world to the Kingdom in order to make Bahrain one of the leaders of WiMax technology deployment worldwide, and to continue Bahrain's tradition of being the first in the Gulf for introducing new telecom technology,” he added.

Mena said the technology would enable it to provide customers with a range of services including wireless broadband, fixed telephony and voice over internet protocol (VoIP).

The operator was one of two winners of national fixed wireless services licences awarded last year, the other being MTC-Vodafone Bahrain.
