Etisalat customers have received huge bills after being targeted by a dialer scam, reports claim.

Local media has reported a number of customers falling victim to the internet scam, but Etisalat would not confirm whether this was the case.

However, in a statement supplied to IT Weekly, the UAE operator did say it had previously warned customers of the scam, and in June last year had introduced a modem to customers to protect them from malicious software.

The dialler Trojan phenomena, as the scam is termed, is not a new problem, according to Symantec technical manager Ivor Rankin, and in fact dates back over several years.

"One of the main problems for telco operators with this scheme is it is very difficult to prove or disprove the originator of the call," he pointed out.

"Ultimately it is the responsibility of the customer to make sure he has efficient and up-to-date security installed," he said.
