Business intelligence firm Business Objects has strengthened its position in the enterprise performance management (EPM) market by taking over Cartesis in a US$300million deal that allows it to add functionality to its own EPM platform.

Privately-held Cartesis, which has more than 1,300 customers around the world, provides financial reporting, consolidation and planning capabilities, as well as a new governance, risk, and corporate compliance portfolio.

"This acquisition marks an important step in our strategy of systematically building out the industry's best performance management platform," said John Schwarz, CEO of Business Objects.

Cartesis will become a part of the Business Objects Enterprise Performance Management product line organisation.

Mark Doll, senior vice president and general manager of Global Services and EPM for Business Objects, and Didier Benchimol, CEO of Cartesis, will lead the integration.

Industry observers have predicted greater consolidation in the business intelligence sector for some time, with the main players in line for acquisition by larger vendors.

In February, Oracle bought Hyperion for US$3.3billion to bolster its own position in the performance management market, a sector tipped for strong growth following a wider uptake of BI systems by enterprises around the world.

BO's main remaining rival, Cognos, has not yet had a formal approach from potential suitors, although IBM  has been rumoured to be interested in the BI vendor for its advanced performance management systems.

Research firm Forrester has estimated the business performance solutions market will grow by 11% through 2010.
