An old favourite, NetSky.t, "stormed" to the top of the virus charts last month, according to security software vendor Kaspersky Lab's virus top 20 list for April.

Netsky.t was created three years ago; the worm's previous highest ranking was fourth in February 2006, Kaspersky said.

However, with virus writers creating multiple variants of their newer creations within a very short space of time, many simply don't appear on the list: Netsky.t is a single variant and "this month it has taken first place by storm, pushing aside all the new generation worms", Kaspersky said.

One of those multiple variant worms, Warezov.ms - which Kaspersky said was probably created by Chinese cyber-criminals - was ranked in second place; Kaspersky said it would probably drop out of the next rankings, as did other Warezov variants.

Netsky.t was not the only "veteran" threat to resurface last month, Kaspersky said, with LovGate and Mytob variants also making an appearance in the top 20. The firm said the reappearance of these threats showed their tenacity and the size of epidemics they have caused in the past.

Perhaps more alarmingly, phishing attacks continue to be a threat, Kaspersky warned, with a new variant of the Bankfraud worm, Bankfraud.ri taking fifth place. "This is evidence of the increasingly wide spread nature of phishing attacks, comparable in scale to e-mail worm epidemics," the report noted.

Other malicious programs made up a significant percentage of all malicious code found in mail traffic, indicating a number of worms and Trojans are actively circulating, the report concluded.
