Hardware giant Dell has joined the Microsoft-Novell interoperability pact, the company said this week.

Under the agreement, the world's second largest computer manufacturer will establish a marketing team to promote Novell's open source SuSe Linux Enterprise Server operating system, focusing on the areas of interoperability workshops, migration proof of concepts and migration services.

"Our customers have told us they want interoperability and expect technology vendors to work better together. Dell is the first major systems provider to align with Microsoft and Novell in this collaboration, and we intend to lead this space," said Rick Becker, vice president of solutions at the Dell Product Group.

The move is part of Dell's strategic shift towards working more with open source software - something many customers requested.

Last week Dell announced it would begin selling PCs preinstalled with the Ubuntu version of the Linux operating system from the end of May.
