What could possibly be keeping IT managers awake during the night? According to a recent survey by HP it is the unlikely candidate of rising print costs.

The firm said over half of those surveyed in its poll of small and medium-sized businesses (SMBs) in the UAE and Saudi Arabia confirmed the cost of printing, especially in colour, was giving them sleepless nights.

The study goes on to claim SMBs are also losing business because they are not spending enough - almost half of the 1,400 respondents said this was the case.

HP said the results show that firms need to optimise their print environment to maximise cost savings and productivity.

"Printing and copying optimisation should not be overlooked," said Amr Hassan, general manager of HP Middle East's Imaging and Printing Group (IPG).

However, rival Oki Printing Solutions has challenged the survey, criticising HP for using "fear factor marketing designed to create the impression that colour printing is a business critical issue".

"To claim that people are being kept awake at night by this issue is, I think, going too far," said John Ross, Oki Middle East general manager. "I do hope that nobody believes that to be quite the case."
