Chinese PC vendor Lenovo is looking into setting up a consumer business unit to drive global sales.

The unit is being established to boost sales of the company's PCs and consumer electronic products in markets outside the Far East.

The number three PC maker in the world has a very strong presence in its home country and much of the surrounding region, but has found life difficult in other parts of the world due to fierce competition from larger rivals HP and Dell.

The plan has yet to be officially announced by Lenovo, but the company has confirmed its intentions.

"[The plan] hasn't been implemented yet, but we have been working towards this goal," a spokesperson told Reuters news agency, adding that no timeline had yet been set for the plan's implementation.

The news gives credence to recent speculation Lenovo is to be split into two separate companies to address the consumer and commercial segments, but the spokesperson denied this.
